The coal industry is one of the largest customers for railroads; in 2011 the Class I railroads transported 815,000 million metric tons of coal, or 44% of their total tonnage for the year (1). As a result, major portion of the Coal Industry's daily operations includes interface with and transportation of coal via the railroads. Further, coal mining facilities maintain their own rail cars and tracks on properties all around the United States.
The steel industry is key customer for railroads; in 2011 the Class I railroads transported more than 126,000 million metric tons of metallic ores, metals and products (1). As a result, major portion of the Steel Industry's daily operations includes interface with and transportation of steel via the railroads. Further, steel facilities maintain their own rail cars and tracks on properties all around the United States.
