OUR HISTORY

In the early 1940s, M.L. Hulcher founded a pipeline-laying company in Virden, IL and expanded the business in 1946 to include the installation and repair of underground gas transmission lines.

In 1963, a chance conversation between a railroad official and Glenn Hulcher at a coffee shop planted the idea that would change the railroad contractor industry.

At that time railroad companies provided their own people and equipment to service derailments. During this conversation, Glenn suggested that Hulcher could clear derailments more quickly and efficiently using the equipment in his father's pipe-laying company.

Two months later he got the chance to prove his claim when a derailment occurred nearby. On this day, the railroad had a difficult time getting their equipment to the derailment. The railroad official called Glenn and as they say - the rest is history. Hulcher's crew arrived and quickly cleared the derailment before the railroad crews could even arrive at the scene.

In the years since, Hulcher Services continued to innovate pioneering such ideas as winch-mounted sidebooms and track loaders for railroad services, padded sideboom tracks, thumbs on excavator buckets and hi-rail, rear-control ledge vacuum trucks.

Today, Glenn Hulcher has retired but the company continues to be an industry leader with more than 650 employees and over 30 divisions located in the United States and Mexico assisting customers with derailments as well as engineering work, track maintenance, disaster response and environmental projects.

OUR CORE VALUES

TRAINING SETS US APART

Hulcher Services devotes considerable resources every year to ensuring our employees are the best trained, safest and most capable crews in the industry.  But what does that mean?

It means that:

  • Every Hulcher employee is background checked as a condition of employment.
  • Hulcher's crew members must receive training on rules, policies and safety requirements approved by the Class I railroad and pass a test. In addition, employees must complete Hulcher's On-Track Safety training every year.
  • Our standard employee training includes the Smith Driving System which is also done annually.
  • Hulcher employees receive extensive specialty training on management, safety, equipment operation, service procedures and environmental services as relevant to their position.

Hulcher is committed to deploying the best trained, most professional crews in our industry that's why we established a state-of-the-art National Training Center in Fort Worth, Texas. The facility is designed to support Hulcher's derailment, engineering, transfer/load adjustment and environmental service lines with classroom and hands-on training. Students train on the same type of equipment utilized by our crews on your projects including excavators, sidebooms, track loaders and wheel loaders as well as specialized equipment used by our transfer and environmental teams.New Paragraph
The Core Program at our National Training Center includes:
  • Heavy Equipment Operator Training - Focuses on safety, policies and procedures, rules and regulations, rail car design and construction, detailed instruction on acceptable rigging requirements as well as related mechanical and maintenance requirements. (40 hours)
  • ER & Advanced Tank Car Safety Training (Internal & External Training) - A 5-day intensive training combining both classroom and hands-on simulated training. The training includes response to diesel fuel spills, railcar repairs, Betts valve operations, Level "A" suite testing, MSDS/SDS, Monomers, transfer methods, pumps, confined space entry, oxidizers and hazardous solids.
